It is official.
Dominica has formally cut diplomatic relations with the Syrian Arab Republic weeks after a controversial decision to establish ties was made and which eventually led to the resignation of the island’s permanent representative to to the United Nations, Loreen Bannis Roberts
Speaking on his Anoou Pale program on the weekend, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit that his government has written to the authorities in Syria and has fulfilled its decision to terminate the relationship between the two countries.
“So that matter has been settled and certainly we have fulfilled the decision to terminate that relationship,” he said.
On March 7 , 2022, Dominica and Syria signed a communique establishing diplomatic relations.
However, when the news became public, a firestorm of controversy ensued.
In a radio and television address soon after, Skerrit distanced himself and his administration from the matter saying for the record that neither the foreign minster nor the Ministry of Foriegn affairs gave instructions to pursue such relationship.
He also announced that Bannis Roberts had tendered her resignation effective May 31 and his government will take the formal steps to end the relationship between Dominica and Syria.
