Dominican earns Doctorate in Computer Science from Florida Atlantic University

Dr. Joffrey Lionel Leevy, son of Alfred and Dorothy Leevy of St Aroment and a proud national of the Commonwealth of Dominica has earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science at Florida Atlantic University (FAU).

Prior to obtaining his PHD, Dr. Leevy received his Bachelor of Science Degree (BSc) in Civil Engineering from the University of the West Indies – St Augustine Campus in Trinidad, a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, and a Master of Science Degree (MSc) in Management Information Systems from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Dr. Leevy successfully defended his dissertation in May, 2022 entitled “Machine Learning Algorithms for Predicting Botnet Attacks in Internet of Things (IoT) Networks”. He accepted his Diploma on August 9th, 2022 at Florida Atlantic University (FAU).

Machine Learning is the use and development of computer systems for building predictive models in Networks and analyzing and drawing references from patterns in data. His area of research stems from implementation of Machine Learning techniques using Artificial Intelligence (AI), Network Cyber Security, Big Data, Class Imbalance and Data Mining.

Dr. Leevy is unique in his skillset and is trained in both computer programming and information security. He is trained to detect fraudulent activity within the Network Intrusion Domain and loves using cutting edge technology to solve problems. He is very passionate about computer programming.

Dr. Leevy, a former student of the Convent Preparatory School and Saint Mary’s Academy attributes his success to hard work, remaining focused, caring teachers and mentors over the years, and tremendous support from family. He has two brothers, Kim and McPherson Leevy, and two sisters Tara and Palesa Leevy.

His mom, Dorothy Leevy, was the Principal of the Convent High School for several years and his dad Alfred Leevy, a former principal of the Dominica Grammar School, was Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Community Development when he retired.

He has earned several awards for his achievements. He topped the 1982 Common Entrance Results List and was Junior Spelling Bee champion for two consecutive years. Dr. Leevy has given many conference presentations and published numerous articles on Google Scholar in his field of study. He is also a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).

He resides in South Florida with his wife Caryl and son Jaden and is currently conducting Research in Machine Learning at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in Boca Raton, Florida.
