Opposition leader, Lennox Linton and opposition Member of Parliament for the Roseau North Constituency, Daniel “Danny” Lugay have been summoned to court by the police for taking part in a weekly event which organizers had dubbed “Walk for Peace, Prosperity and Freedom.”
According to police documents received by both men, their action was “against the Public Order Act Chapter 15:01 of the revised Law of Dominica.”
The summon from the police said Lugay took part in the event on March 30, 2022 in Roseau without the written permission of the Commissioner of police to do so.”
The one for Linton said he took part in the event on April 6.
Both men are expected to appear in court on May 19, 2022.
Led by activist Athie Martin, “Walk for Peace, Prosperity and Freedom,” was organized by a group of individuals representing political parties, the private sector, religious and civil society organizations calling for good and accountable governance in Dominica.
It has been held every Wednesday for the past five weeks but it attracted the attention of the police from the very beginning with police chief Daniel Carbon warning that by law permission must be given by him for such activities.
Online news portal, Nature Isle News reported that the police have already visited Martin’s home and told him he will be taken to court for the walk and other people have also been summoned to court for taking part.
Despite this, those who took part in the walk have vowed in the past that they will continue.
