Chaguanas business members are making a desperate appeal, calling for access for guns to protect themselves.
The director of the Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce Sunil Moonasa is making their desperation clear, as this report from TTT News confirms.
“We really, really need to ask the Ministry of National Security to restart the issuing process of firearm user licenses. So business owners can be equipped to protect themselves. Yes we understand the pros and cons of having a firearm, we know the risk but we are faced daily with trigger-happy criminals,” he said on Wednesday at a community town hall meeting on crime.
He made the remark in light of the murder of a businessman and is calling on the police to make their presence be felt more strongly in the community.
“But you know what we need?” he asked. “We stronger and tougher policing strategies, we need you presence gentlemen, we really need to feel your presence, not in a harsh way but in an empathetic way.”
Senior Superintendent Kurt Simon responded on the role of the police in curbing crime in the area saying partnership between the police and the community is being actively fostered.
